Introduction

Beryllium copper is supplied in multiple product forms—rod, bar, strip, plate, and wire. Each form is optimized for specific manufacturing processes and end-use applications. Selecting the right form at the procurement stage reduces material waste, simplifies machining, and lowers overall component cost.

Understanding the distinction between forms is the first step:

Rod vs Bar: What's the Difference?

The distinction between rod and bar is primarily cross-sectional shape. Rod is round—used for turned components on lathes, such as bushings, pins, and electrodes. Bar is rectangular or square—used for machined brackets, mold bases, and structural components.

For machined parts requiring multi-axis milling, rectangular bar stock reduces the amount of material removal compared to starting from plate. For turned parts, rod minimizes preparation time.

A practical tip: if your component's largest dimension is the diameter, order rod. If your component is longer in two dimensions (length and width), order bar or plate.

Strip for Spring and Connector Applications

Strip is the dominant form for electronic and electrical applications. Beryllium copper strip is typically supplied in thicknesses from 0.05 mm to 3.0 mm, in widths from 3 mm to 300 mm. It comes in various tempers:

• TB00 (Solution annealed): Soft, for complex stamping and forming

• TD04 (Work hardened): Pre-hardened for moderate forming

• TF00 (Age hardened): Maximum strength, limited post-forming

The most common procurement specification is 1/2 hard (TD02) strip in 0.1–0.3 mm thickness, which offers a balance of formability and spring performance.

Plate for Mold Applications

Beryllium copper plate is specified when the application requires a large, flat cross-section—typically mold bases, inserts, and cavity plates for plastic injection molding. Plate thicknesses range from 5 mm to 100+ mm.

For mold applications, plate is typically supplied in the solution-annealed condition for machining, then age-hardened after machining is complete. This sequence avoids distortion from heat treatment after precision machining.

Size Tolerances and Custom Options

• Cold-drawn rod: h9/h10 diameter tolerance

• Ground rod: h7/h8 diameter tolerance

6. Quantity and cut-to-size requirements
